At one and one half stories and originally facing the lane behind its present location, this double house illustrates both the density and modesty of worker housing along Savannah’s lanes, characteristics often erased with subsequent development. Having five plastered rooms in each unit, three of which were heated, and a double-pile plan featuring front rooms with wood-paneled wainscoting, speaks to the notable pretensions of this particular example. Moved in 1971 from 419–421 E. Broughton Lane to the site of the previous formal house on the front of the lot, this building attests to the interests of preservationists to showcase characteristic Savannah architecture even if in an uncharacteristic location.
