The Gray Building with its columned portico supporting a classical pediment—now SCAD’s Kiah Hall—was described as Roman Doric (unusual in lacking bases) when it was constructed as the Central’s administrative headquarters. The completion date is recorded in the painted central coffer above the entrance. The heavily altered interior retains Italianate fireplaces that recall its original corporate opulence. J. T. Turner Construction oversaw the thorough restoration in 2013. Between the two buildings is a stairway descending to the SCAD Museum of Art. The landscaped courtyard beside the museum was originally the Dooley Freight Yard with rail spurs accessing the adjacent up-freight and down-freight warehouses.
