Kauai Community Federal Credit Union

-A A +A
1976, Bank Building Corp. Hardy and Elua sts.
  • (HABS/HAER)

A harmony of horizontal and vertical tensions played out in white and blue, this credit union building has a simple, yet strong, modern composition. The straightforward concrete cornice, accentuated by its painted blue line and credit union logo, engenders a lateral thrust, which is reinforced by the recessed bank of windows directly below. In turn, the curving, corner buttresses contain and dissipate this horizontality. The stair rail and cantilevered portico echo the curve of the corner buttresses, adding visual energy.
