Pease Creek flows by this 1,200-acre state park. The park was planned by John R. Fitzsimmons, a graduate in landscape architecture from Harvard University. He laid out a picturesque series of roads and trails in an Olmsted-like fashion. He set aside a “wilderness” area, and also a secluded section which he labeled “The Sanctuary.” During the later 1920s and on through the 1930s the park acquired a number of rustic constructions, one of the most handsome being a wide-arched stone bridge.
