Louis Wilmesmeier “Bank” Barn

-A A +A
1859. 1.5 miles northeast of Fort Madison on US 61
  • Louis Wilmesmeier "Bank" Barn (David Gebhard and Gerald Mansheim)

This really immense board-and-batten wood barn was built into the hillside so that easy access could be gained on two levels. The principal louvered windows are round arched as is each of the windows in the three ridgetop cupolas. The effect of these windows is sufficient to suggest that the Italianate style was most likely being considered by the barn's builder.
