Lake Superior brownstone was used to construct this Romanesque “pile.” A seemingly stern but actually quite fairy-tale-like crenellated castle resulted. The north wing was added in the same style in 1912–1913. Within the building is a Federal Arts Project (WPA) mural, Arrival of the First Teacher, by Herbert O. Mayer.
