A full-width monumental pedimented portico supported on paired Ionic columns dominates this brick Colonial Revival house, Lake Washington’s most impressive surviving residence. Built for planter P. L. Mann on the site of Confederate General Wade Hampton’s demolished antebellum house, the two-story house features a broken-pediment frontispiece and a leaded glass fanlight entrance. Inside, naturalistic murals decorate the center-hall, and the staircase is located in a side hall, Natchez fashion. Vicks-burg builder-architect Havis adapted plans and specifications from architect Alger of West Virginia.
