West Point began as a cotton-shipping stop on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. The town’s relative prosperity is evident in several of its downtown buildings, including this city hall designed by Meridian architect-engineer Stuart. The two-story building features recessed brick courses, terra-cotta window detailing, a modillioned cornice, and an elaborated clock tower. Across the street at 133 Commerce, the four-story former Henry Clay Hotel (1929–1930) once served visitors arriving by rail and now houses retirees.
