OLD HOMESTEAD

-A A +A
1852. 503 W. Commerce St.

Physician and planter George Augustus Sykes built this two-story, wooden, Greek Revival residence with stout paneled portico columns and pilasters. The columns are so widely spaced that the ensemble resembles a giant gateway. Under the entablature, jigsawn millwork displays vaguely Gothic motifs. To the rear of the house stands a Carpenter Gothic wooden carriage house and stables with steep gables and jigsawn vergeboards.
