Southern Market

-A A +A
1888, C. Emlen Urban. S. Queen and W. Vine sts.

This is probably Urban's earliest commission, and his recent training in Willis Hale's office is particularly in evidence here in the towered and gabled silhouette, banded brick, and the Queen Anne detail that articulates every change of plane and surface. The market was closed when the region shifted to grocery stores, but it has been adapted to serve as a Visitors’ Center, housing offices of the Chamber of Commerce and local historical groups.
