The Hotel American anticipated Scranton's Hotel Jermyn (1894) and denotes Carbondale's continuing pursuit of urban status. Duckworth designed a four-story Richardsonian Romanesque building with well-done foliated ornament gracing the spandrels and a porte-cochere that suggests more gracious days.
