Based on sixteenth-century Italian Renaissance prototypes, this building follows the stylistic lead of the Mother Church at Huntington and Massachusetts avenues in Boston, but its giant interior space is too economically detailed to live up to the majestic promise outside. Strangers, viewing it from afar, often assume it to be the state capitol.
