Maintenance Center

1961, Castellucci and Galli; Occupasstuxet Rd.

Diagonally opposite the former airport terminals, this geodesic dome in aluminum tubing and sheets demonstrates the ability of Buckminster Fuller's tetrahedral structures in light materials to provide vast free-span spaces. As is the case with many of his domes, the more usual arrangement of buried structure and exposed protective cover is here inverted so that the structure is exterior to the covering although both are fully visible. The dome comes to the ground on sixteen elongated tilted piers, providing openings all around for access by the airport's larger vehicles.
