Charles H. Flato Building

-A A +A
1911. 205 E. Kleberg Ave.

This multi-use building housed hardware and furniture stores, a lumber company, and an opera house. With the financial backing of Mrs. King, Kleberg and his cousin Flato opened the Kingsville Lumber Company in the ground floor to be the lead supplier of building materials in the city. On the second and third floors, the opera house was the center for civic events and entertainment. With room for 641 spectators, it closed prematurely in 1918 due to competition from less expensive movie theaters. Today, the rehabilitated, buff brick, two-part commercial block with twin front elevations includes stores in its ground floor and offices above, while the opera house portion remains unused but intact.
