First Baptist Church of Alpine

-A A +A
1917, James E. Green. 203 N. 4th St.

This church replaced an 1896 adobe building on the same corner site. Set on a raised basement, the two-story classical building is faced with dark brick and surmounted by a central octagonal drum and dome. On the E. Sul Ross Avenue and N. 4th elevations, wide stairs lead to inset, two-story entrance porticoes each framed with four fluted Tuscan columns supporting an entablature and pediment. Behind the columns are double-height arched stained glass windows. Inside, the worship space is a fan-shaped quarter circle, with curving pews on a raked floor focused on the pulpit and baptismal area in the northwest corner. A second-story balcony follows the same curves.
