Lincoln Tower (Hotel Lincoln)

-A A +A
1951, W. W. Ahlschlager; 1960 addition, J. Ellsworth Powell. 311 W. 4th St.

The Lincoln is an eight-story, modernist slab with alternating horizontal bands of light-colored brick spandrels and more intensely toned brick bands between paired windows. The top floor was set back on the south end to produce a roof terrace, played off compositionally against the mechanical penthouse bearing period-appropriate graphics. At the building’s corner, five stacked balconies wrap the corner, giving the Lincoln a touch of Miami Beach flair. W. W. Ahlschlager (1887–1965) moved his practice from Chicago to Dallas in 1940.

The hotel’s cabana wing and swimming pool were added in 1960. The hotel was transformed into a retirement residence in 1968.
