The courthouse by Amarillo-based Townes and Funk is a stripped classical composition in smooth cream limestone with vertically stacked windows and aluminum spandrel panels. Projecting three-story wings flank a central four-story block, with a three-story recessed entrance portico. The scheme forms a final reduction of the stepped courthouse model of the 1930s. Chamfered reveals around the windows give a feeling of depth and mass.
Windowless one-story wings by Riherd and Huckabee of Andrews are compatible with the original, but a 1990s stucco-clad elevator-tower and office addition at the rear of the building are unsympathetic.
