The first in the succession of distinguished hotels (Windsor, Grace, Hilton, Wooten) to meet railroad travelers’ needs and provide local community facilities, this is the oldest commercial building in Abilene. The three-story structure in buff brick was built here when N. 1st Street was still largely occupied by piles of buffalo bones, rail yards, and temporary buildings related to rail freight. A one-story iron canopy and balcony extends along both street fronts, conveying a New Orleans French Quarter character. Hooded, segmental arches top each window, and chimneys mark each bay along the parapet, which has elaborate brickwork in corbels and dentils. The building was rehabilitated in 1997 by the Tittle Luther Partnership for office use and now houses the Abilene Chamber of Commerce.
