By 1900, Mineral Wells was a leading Texan health resort, with over 150,000 visitors a year. In 1904, after Ed Dismuke came to try the medicinal waters for his ailing stomach and claimed he was restored to health, he founded the Famous Mineral Water Company and built this plant to develop products from the water. These included Pronto-lax, Residuum, Dismuke’s Famous Crystals, and Dismuke’s Eyebath. During the 1930s, the company focused on Crazy Water Crystals and constructed the three-story concrete-frame factory at 300 NW 7th Street to extract the minerals from the water, which was more economical to distribute than bottled water. Today, the simple, one-story red brick structure and the two-story warehouse behind it still dispense the mineral water that gave the city its name and fame. A six-foot concrete bottle in front of the building serves to advertise its wares.
