John L. Cleveland owned the Cleburne Cottonseed Oil Mill and the Sterling and Cleveland Hardware Store, and he and his wife, Annie, were civic leaders in Cleburne, active in the Methodist Church, the Red Cross, and other associations. Their social position required a large and showy house. The two-story Queen Anne house has a front-facing gable with fish scale shingles and a large keyhole window on the first floor. The front porch wraps around an octagonal corner tower. These features, together with the overall Eastlake character of the woodwork, indicate a pattern book design source. The house has been a bed-and-breakfast since c. 1998.
