Downtown Baptist Church (First Baptist Church)

-A A +A
First Baptist Church
1854, Thomas A. Tefft, with later alterations. 212 S. Washington St.
  • Downtown Baptist Church (First Baptist Church) (Library of Virginia)

This fine example of the Providence, Rhode Island–based architect's Lombard Romanesque style lacks the heaviness of later Richardsonian interpretations such as Glenn Brown's work around the corner. The northern steeple is a later addition, though Tefft's drawings show spires. The light tan color is different from Tefft's original ocher stucco.
