Virginia Commonwealth University Dance Center (Sacred Heart School)

-A A +A
Sacred Heart School
1917, Carneal and Johnston. c. 1970, renovation. Southwest corner of Floyd Ave. and Morris St.

The former Sacred Heart School resembles several other school buildings designed by Carneal and Johnston for the Catholic church in Richmond. Large windows allow plenty of light and ventilation in this large, rectangular red brick box. Stylistically it is restrained Georgian Revival, the primary ornamentation being the Doric portico. The building is magnificently sited at a prominent bend in Floyd Avenue created by the original Sydney plan for the Fan.
