Washington Ward and its square honor George Washington, who came to Savannah in 1791 on his “Southern Tour.” During the nineteenth century, the ward had a working-class demographic with a large Irish population. The northeast tything lots were occupied by workshops, warehouses, and light industry in the later nineteenth century. Today, some commercial buildings occupy the northern half of the ward, which is mostly residential.
