Rock Rapids

The northwestern section of Iowa was settled in the late 1860s, Rock Rapids itself in 1868–1869. The town's grid was established just south of the Rock River at its juncture with Tom and Kanaranzie creeks. The community became the county seat with the establishment of Lyon County in 1871.
