Winston County was created in 1833, and Louisville was immediately designated the county seat. The town developed along Robinson Road, which was laid out in 1821 and connected Columbus to Jackson. Today most traffic arrives from the west by MS 14, and along this route Louisville rises up as a city upon a hill, with the tower of the First United Methodist Church (1917 and after) at Main Street and Church Avenue serving as a visual gateway to downtown.
