W. R. Castle, Jr., House

-A A +A
1929, Carrère and Hastings. 2200 S St. NW

S Street has a remarkable series of Colonial Revival mansions that exhibit differing expressions of the style. Two neighboring houses by Carrère and Hastings, at 2200 and 2222 S Street NW (see SK62), are the latest in the group and are linked by elegant compositions and subtle details. Closer to English Regency architecture than any American manifestation of Georgian architecture, they employ all header bricks for their ground stories, bold and elaborate door frames, and widely spaced fenestration in unusual patterns. The Castle house's Greek Doric limestone porch topped by bold and varied sculpted anthemion antefixes is an exciting contrast to planar brick walls.
