A long, uphill driveway off Highway 270 leads to the Bond Estate, which includes three distinct areas: the Bond family homestead, Kalahikiola Church, and Kohala Girls' School. Many of the buildings were constructed under the direction of the Reverend Elias Bond. He and his wife, Ellen, arrived in Hawaii in 1841, part of the ninth company of missionaries, and were immediately assigned to Kohala, where they worked until their deaths in 1896 and 1881, respectively.
