Empire Theater

-A A +A
1912, Scarborough and Howell. 1977, renovation, Bond Comet Westmoreland. 118 W. Broad St.

The Empire is the oldest surviving theater building in Richmond. The exterior has been purged of its ornament, leaving only the coffered arch to suggest its original grandeur. Fortunately, the lavish neoclassical ornament on the interior of the theater escaped obliteration. Claude K. Howell, one of the partners of the designing firm, would later become one of the most prolific theater designers in the South.
