Commercial Block (now Red Umbrella)

now Red Umbrella
c. 1890. Northeast corner of G Ave. and 7th St.
  • Commercial Block (now Red Umbrella) (David Gebhard and Gerald Mansheim)

This is a commercial building that exhibits the typical projecting corner round bay, in this instance sheathed in metal; but it is the surface fenestration of this two-story brick block that attracts one's attention. Carefully placed horizontal bands of stone tie the arched and square-topped windows together, and within the side facade the lower band of stone penetrates through the lower windows.
