According to various historical accounts, the Commandant's House, Quarters A (50 Commandants Way), was erected in 1856. However, the design of the house is two stories with a mansard roof that is more compatible with the 1867 mansard roof on the Chelsea Marine Hospital (CL8). For this reason it seems likely that the mansard roof and veranda were added in the 1860s. Between the Commandant's Quarters and the Chelsea Naval Hospital (CL7) building are two more houses, Quarters B and C (60–70 and 80–90 Commandants Way). These bowfront Colonial Revival–style structures were built in 1906 and designed by Daniel Howard Woodbury, a Boston architect.
