The Cottage (Boynkin House)

As an example of the generally conservative nature of Virginia architecture, the design origins of this cottage probably lie in A. J. Downing's books, originally published before the Civil War. Downing's designs, however, were intended for a rural setting rather than for an urban center. The two-story house is of boardand-batten frame construction with a gable roof. Bargeboards decorate the gable, and railings and latticed columns detail the porch.
