Herman and Hattie Ely Besser House (Lutz House)

This bungalow was the first home built of Bes-Stone Split Block. The blocks were manufactured by the Besser Manufacturing Company using a formula patented in 1925 that covered aggregate gradation, use of larger stone chips for decorative split-face effect, proper use of cement and water, and mixing and splitting information. Herman Besser (1853–1926), founder of the Besser Manufacturing Company, built the house in 1923. He and his wife, Hattie Ely (1855–1943), came from Erie County, New York, to northern Michigan in 1882.
