A. D. Paalzow Block

The Paalzow Block is an elegant two-part brick commercial block fitted with windows and fronted with prefabricated cast-iron vertical members and a galvanized iron cornice, entablature, and pediment. Mesker Brothers of St. Louis, Missouri, manufactured the iron members for this building. Mesker and other manufacturers of iron architectural elements advertised in their catalogs that a facade assembled from iron parts provided an elaborate front at a fraction of the cost of masonry construction. This building has held a department store, a furrier, and a wholesale grocery.
