John Cudahy, a Chicago meat packer, built this huge shingled Queen Anne house atop terraces and a foundation of craggy field and limestone boulders on the West Bluff above the Grand Hotel. The house has a round corner tower with a bell-cast roof, a belvedere, hipped-roof dormers, and a classically detailed sweeping porch. Diamond, fish-scale, and rectangular shingles cover the exterior walls. Prominent Citizens and Industries of Chicago (1901) noted, “In addition to his handsome residence at Thirty-second street and Michigan Avenue, which was built in 1883, Mr. Cudahy has a beautiful summer home at Mackinac.”
