Commissioned from Knoxville-based Barber, this two-story brick building originally housed Pendleton Brothers hardware and general merchandise business. One of the first commercial buildings erected along E. Ridgeway Street, it features a parapet ornamented with such prefabricated millwork elements as turned knobs, ringlike appliques, sawn brackets, scalloped borders, and Eastlake-inspired sunburst motifs. The storefront was modernized in the 1920s or 1930s with aluminum framing, large display windows, and an architectural-glass surround.
