The most prestigious residential street in the city, McCormick Boulevard is lined with single-family houses that aspire to some level of grandeur. The street begins near the downtown and ascends eleven blocks up one of the city's narrow valleys. A large Colonial Revival house, Hill Crest (1100 McCormick Boulevard), on the uppermost lot dominates the street. Built for businessman A. O. Surber in 1911, it is one of the city's largest houses. A monumental pedimented portico with paired Doric columns, a one-story wraparound porch, and modillion cornices are the dwelling's crowning touches. It is situated among more typical Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman houses on the boulevard.
