McVille City Hall and Auditorium

This site-cast concrete municipal auditorium is comparable to nearby auditoriums of similar date in Park River (WA9), Pekin, and Hensel. Much of the construction material for this WPA project was salvaged from a local theater, the Gem Theater, that was dismantled to make room for the new auditorium. The basement ballroom’s hardwood floor, for example, was from the Gem. Above the Moderne building’s raised entrance, stylized triglyphs and metopes finish the top of the building. Large side windows allow a maximum of natural light into the auditorium. The decorative exterior treatment was intended to create as much hand work for laborers as possible, a dominant theme in most WPA projects.
