Pennstar Bank (First National Bank)
During the Roaring Twenties, several regional architectural firms became bank specialists, leaving their mark in small towns. Carbondale's is by an Allentown designer who was active across eastern Pennsylvania. The chamfered profile of this five-story miniskyscraper looks to the future, even as it rises from a very traditional Classical Revival base. Across the street is the Masonic Temple (1875), a playful work by Fred J. Amsden; the loss of its tower and most of its windows has not dampened its personality.
