Cloud House (John Bannan House)
With delicate Corinthian porticoes embellishing its fieldstone walls, this late Federal house, tucked away on the steep hillside above S. Centre Street, seems almost to aspire to the status of a Villa Rotunda for the coalfields. Heavy tree cover now obscures the mansion's original setting, but the grounds are still graced with two marvelous octagonal outbuildings, both crowned with Gothic Revival spires. The house was constructed for the brother of Miners’ Journal publisher Benjamin Bannan, whose outrageous Gothic Revival newspaper office once stood nearby.
