Continental Square

York's central square at the intersection of Market and George streets followed Lancaster by having its first county courthouse (1754) in the open space of the square. During the occupation of Philadelphia, the Continental Congress met in the York courthouse between September 1777 and June 1778. The courthouse was demolished in 1841 ( YO12). The square, recently rebranded to reflect York's brief role in hosting the Continental Congress, is now bordered by buildings that represent several eras of the city's history.
