Greenfield, the oldest two-story frame house remaining in the county, attests to the affluence possible from cultivation of Charlotte County's fertile soil. The symmetrical house has a two-story five-bay central section with interior-end brick chimneys and is flanked by one-story wings. The small pedimented portico is a later addition. The house was built for Isaac Read, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses who died while fighting as a colonel in the Revolution. In 1850, the Agricultural Census listed the Reads of Greenfield as producers of twenty thousand pounds of tobacco as well as seventeen hundred and fifty bushels of corn. His well-preserved house, overlooking fields and woods, remains in the hands of his descendants.
