State Police Barracks

The State Police Barracks were the first of four such facilities which this firm designed in variations on a Colonial Revival format. In every instance, a two-story central office and dormitory block is flanked by garage wings masked as office, or perhaps stable, extensions. As with much 1930s Neo-Colonial design, the prototypes were from the Mid-Atlantic rather than the New England colonies. Examples from the middle colonies seem to have offered the picturesque and functional possibilities of spreading central blocks and wings, which are rarer in New England precedent, as well as more genial detail.
