A number of small summer camp meeting groves exist in Rhode Island. Visually, this is the most compelling. Small houses, all painted white, in sizes ranging from an early tourist cabin to a mini-bungalow straggle around the perimeter of a sloping site with rock outcroppings. Scattered about in the center space are a dormitory, refectory, shower building, and, on the biggest outcropping, emblazoned with painted mottoes—“He Lives,” “Be Ye Holy,” “Jesus Saves”—the meeting hall. The carpentry is plain and to the point. The most interesting single structure may be one of the small houses on the western edge of the site; of wood, it takes its form from a metal house trailer rather than a gabled cottage.
