The church is said to have begun as the courthouse of Lunenburg County before Mecklenburg was established in 1765 and moved several times before coming to rest on the present site in 1888. It was remodeled in a Colonial Revival idiom by Fauber and he enlarged it in the 1970s. Several features indicate its age, including raised-panel wainscoting and a reassembled structural frame of two eighteenth-century periods.
