This 1928 inn incorporates an 1834 house as its east wing. Charleston architect Walter Martens duplicated the gable-ended facade on the west and filled the space in between with a slightly recessed, two-story block fronted by a giantorder portico with square pillars. The result is a building of immense charm that calls to mind the region's antebellum spa hotels. The interior of the General Lewis is furnished with area antiques and fittings, some of them from the old spa resorts. Although the inn is more expansive than its residential neighbors, its scale and details are similar, and it blends easily into its surroundings.
