The Schmulbach House, another architectural hybrid, began as a two-story, three-bay Wheeling Italianate with segmental-arched window heads and—presumably—a bracketed cornice. The third-floor addition has four round-arched windows. The polygonal bay window in the center of the second-story facade also postdates the original house. The resultant composition would look absurd on its own, but standing as it does in the midst of this already eclectic block, it fits.

Henry Schmulbach lived here before moving “out the pike.” A native of Germany, he amassed a fortune from his brewery. The house features a brewery motif with garlands that have been identified as hops decorating the trim. Schmulbach also built the Schmulbach Building ( WH19) in downtown Wheeling.
