This group of large houses formed the nucleus of one of the Salem Land and Improvement Company's most prestigious neighborhood developments. Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles are most typical of the houses that extend along the two blocks. Ornate woodwork, often painted in polychrome schemes characteristic of the Victorian era, gives the street a “painted ladies” character. One of the most carefully restored areas of historic period housing in Salem, Pennsylvania Avenue also boasts street trees, wrought-iron fenced yards, and original outbuildings in rear yards.
