General Francis Marion Hotel

Constructed of reinforced concrete with a veneer of Kingsport velveteen brick, the five-story building has the U-shaped plan typical of hotel buildings. Renaissance Revival in style, the red brick exterior is elaborated with a one-story portico in contrasting colors that is topped by a balustraded balcony, quoins, and cartouches. Storefronts flank the central entrance. Arched windows on the second story indicate the location of a ballroom, which retains its original walnut paneling and oak floor. The hotel was built by two Marion businessmen who saw the potential of increased automobile traffic along U.S. 11.
