Boydton is among the least spoiled historic towns in Southside and possesses a rare visual coherence. A small town of about 450 people, Boydton has been the seat of the county since its formation in 1764. Despite a few unfortunate losses late in the twentieth century, the best aspect of the town is the generally intact nature of the courthouse square environs and nearby residential neighborhoods. The square is surrounded by a few nineteenth-century commercial buildings but most were built soon after a major fire in 1907 destroyed wooden stores to the east.
