The county seat (1859, 6,408 feet), on Kiowa Creek, originated as a Pony Express and Butterfield Overland stagecoach stop. While Elbert and Elizabeth battled it out for county seat honors, Kiowa officials quietly built a two-room courthouse and began holding trials.
